California Ovarian Cancer Awareness Program Mini-Grants

The goal of the COCAP Mini-Grant Program is to collaborate with community-based organizations, academic institutions, and other non-profit entities motivated to raise awareness and promote education about ovarian cancer.  Applications are typically released in the summer.  COCAP encourages  innovative programs or activities aiming to educate healthcare providers and/or community members.  Activities should focus on the symptoms, current diagnostic recommendations and/or treatment recommendations for ovarian cancer.

Congratulations to FY11-12 Ovarian Cancer Mini-Grant Awardees!

Six projects will be launched in January 2012 and will work towards the ovarian cancer objectives in California's Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, 2011-2015:

The Ethnic Health Institute of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center will conduct an ovarian cancer town hall meeting for women in Oakland.  The event will feature an expert guest speaker and conclude with a twofold call to action that includes using a diary to track persistent symptoms (for follow-up discussion with a healthcare provider) and sharing ovarian cancer information with at least one female family member or friend.

The California Health Collaborative will develop a radio podcast about ovarian cancer and conduct two educational sessions for Hmong women over 40 years old in Butte County.  After airing, the podcast will be available for download and for broadcast in future collaborations.

The Ovarian Cancer Orange County Alliance (OCOCA) will produce two public service announcements in a local newspaper to increase awareness of ovarian cancer and inform community members of the organization's free educational presentations.  OCOCA will respond to requests and coordinate at least three ovarian cancer presentations in the community.

The University of California, Irvine will host its second ovarian cancer symposium consisting of a morning Continuing Medical Education program for primary care providers followed by an afternoon program for community members.  Educational materials from the event will serve as ovarian cancer monographs for future dissemination.

California Northstate College of Pharmacy's Vietnamese Cancer Awareness, Research and Education Society (VNCARES) will host an ovarian cancer seminar for healthcare professional students and faculty.  VNCARES will also share ovarian cancer information with the Vietnamese-American community in the Sacramento area through health fairs and two local publications.

Women's Cancer Awareness Group (WCAG) will host its annual Day for Women in Sonoma County, this year focusing on ovarian cancer and clinical trials.  WCAG will expand its outreach and promotion to increase attendance by survivors, healthcare professionals and community members.  In addition, interpretation services will be available for Spanish-speaking participants at the event.
