Inventory of Established Data Sources Relevant to Cancer Control in CaliforniaThis Inventory of Established Data Sources Relevant to Cancer Control in California was compiled in 2006
by the Data & Surveillance team of the California Dialogue on Cancer (CDOC). This inventory builds upon the work of
Wingo et al as presented in 'A National Framework for Cancer Surveillance in the United States' (2005) in order to provide
information about sources of national and California-specific data to researchers, policymakers, advocacy groups, and others
with an interest in comprehensive cancer control planning.
This inventory includes detailed information on state and national data sources relevant to all aspects of the cancer continuum.
In addition to providing information about what data sources are currently available, the data inventory can also serve to
identify gaps in existing, California specific, cancer suveillance systems across the cancer continuum and to set priorities
for enhancing cancer surveillance in California.
Each inventoried data source includes the following details:
- Name and website link
- Description
- Survey methods (e.g. household survey, telephone survey)
- Time period (e.g. annual, biannual)
- Population monitored (e.g. specific age, race/ethnic make-up)
- Data access (e.g. public use access, restricted access to qualified researchers)
- Query system (e.g. interactive web access)
- Reports/publications
- Key data (relevant to cancer control)
- Other languages (if administered in language(s) other than English)
- Smallest area of geographic analysis
- Contact information

Allyn Fernandez-Ami. The inventory will be updated every 3 to 4 months based
on user feedback as well as the release of new data sources.
