FY08-09 Mini-Grant Program

Congratulations to all the 2008-2009 CRC Mini-Grant Awardees!

We would also like to thank all of the organizations that submitted applications to the CRC Mini-Grant program. We received many excellent applications and gave each one serious consideration. Our hope is to continue the mini-grant program each fiscal year, budget permitting.

We have selected several organizations that will execute projects that are in line with the CRC program's goals and mission. To learn more about each program just scroll down.

 


Saath/Special Service for Groups

Project Summary: Saath will develop culturally appropriate brochures to be disseminated to South Asian communities at mosques, temples, gurudwaras, churches , and cultural organizations and communities.  In addition Saath will also provide healthcare providers and community leaders the most up-to-date information on colorectal cancer screening through a CME on colorectal cancer.

Hmong Women's Heritage Association

Project Summary: HWHA will conduct two colorectal cancer 101 presentations to the Hmong women and modify NCI colorectal cancer educational materials for dissemination.  These educational pieces will be distributed to medical providers and clinics that treat a large number of Hmong clients as well as at Hmong social events, educational forums, and health fairs.

Colon Cancer Alliance

Project Summary: The Colon Cancer Alliance will be spearheading the organization of the Undy 5000, a 5K walk/run event designed to raise awareness about the importance of screening for colorectal cancer.

Samoan National Nurses Association

Project Summary: Working through a partnership with six area hospitals the Samoan Natl. Nurse Association aims to promote screening among the Samoan communities by providing culturally sensitive and language specific interventions. As a complement to their health education work they also aim to establish a process for a continuum of support by networking with other community-based agencies, health care providers and volunteers.

Cancer Center of Santa Barbara

Project Summary: The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara plans to improve their colorectal cancer outreach to Latino community members by providing cross-cultural training to their Community Health Department staff and support personnel.  As part of their training they will create culturally/language appropriate materials for Latinos regarding colorectal cancer myths and misconceptions.

Pacific Islander Heart Partnership

Project Summary: The Pacific islander Colorectal Cancer Project will address the critical cancer disparities among Pacific Islanders by partnering with St. Joseph’s Regional Cancer Center for a CRC conference for providers on the recommended CRC screening test and cultural consideration related to Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations throughout Orange County. In addition, the Partnership will also use the Pacific Islander CRC Tool Kit at cultural gatherings in Southern California to promote community awareness of CRC risks and screening tests.

Stennis Family Foundation

Project Summary: The Stennis Family Foundation will implement the Care “4” Yourself Colon Cancer Prevention Program targeting the African-American community.  The Care “4” Yourself program  will include training 10 health educators to outreach to churches, community organizations and schools.

Alta Bates

Project Summary: Alta Bates will conduct outreach to Korean physicians/medical providers in the Bay Area by inviting them to attend a CME discussing the various colorectal cancer screening options.  The lecture will feature a personal injury lawyer who will inform the doctors of the legal issues related to not screening as well as a GI specialist from Alta Bates.  In addition the projects will provide a low cost/free referral resource list with information on culturally competent services.

Filipino Community Center Collaborative

Project Summary: The Filipino Cancer Collaborative will develop translated colorectal cancer education materials into Tagalog and Ilokano to enhance outreach to Filipino community-based organizations, churches and health care providers.  In addition they will conduct 3-4 colorectal cancer education workshops at local hospitals, health centers, Filipino CBOS and/or churches in San Francisco/Daly City..
